Penalty box
The penalty box screen is designed for officials stationed at the penalty tent. It shows athletes currently serving time penalties and helps manage the flow of penalised athletes.
Redesigned in v8.6.2
The penalty box screen was rebuilt in v8.6.2. The core workflow is unchanged but the layout may differ from older screenshots.
How it works
When a penalty is submitted and approved, the athlete may need to serve a time penalty in the penalty box. The penalty box screen shows:
- Athletes currently in the box.
- The penalty type and time remaining.
- A timer that counts down the penalty duration.

The screen keeps the device awake while timing is active, so you don't need to worry about the screen turning off mid-penalty.
Penalty box types
Depending on the race configuration, there may be separate penalty boxes:
- Run penalty box — for penalties served during the run leg.
- Bike penalty box — for penalties served during the bike leg. The number of bike penalty box positions is configurable.
- Stop and go — an alternative to time penalties where the athlete must stop briefly.
Drafting vs general penalties
The penalty box distinguishes between:
- Drafting penalties — served by athletes who received a drafting penalty on the bike.
- General penalties — all other penalty types.
Officials assigned as penalty box officials (drafting or general) see the relevant penalties for their assignment.
Managing the box
Each athlete card in the list shows the athlete number, the penalty type code (e.g. "Penalties: V" for Other Violations) and a count indicator like x2 when the same athlete has multiple penalties queued. Each card has two buttons:
- Start (blue) — begin the timer when the athlete enters the box. The timer counts down from the race's configured penalty time (e.g. 4:00 for run-penalty races).
- Served (green) — mark the penalty as served once the time is complete (or earlier if the athlete handled it on a previous lap).
A search field at the top of the screen lets you jump to a specific athlete by number. A small camera icon indicates the penalty has attached evidence media.
Permissions
Only officials with penalty box permissions (typically Chief Penalty Box or Assistant Penalty Box TO roles) see the penalty box screen. These officials also receive penalty notifications so they know when to expect athletes.
