Chat
RaceRanger includes real-time team chat for coordination during events. Officials can communicate without leaving the app or switching to a separate messaging tool.
Chat is available on medium and large events.
Chat channels
Each event has pre-configured chat channels based on roles. The specific channels depend on your organisation's configuration — for example, there may be channels for the technical team, the local organising committee, media, or other groups.
Additional channels can be created by officials with the right permissions. Some channels are race-specific (linked to a particular race within the event), while others are event-wide.
Which channels you see
Your role determines which channels are visible. Each role is configured with access to specific channels. You'll only see the channels assigned to your role.
Tap Chat from the race mode screen to open the chat list. Race-wide channels appear alongside any per-incident threads, with the race name shown for context.

Sending messages
From the chat list, tap a channel to open it. You can:
- Send text messages — type and send.
-
Attach images, videos, files, voice notes, and locations — tap the + icon to the left of the Message field. A row of options opens: Camera, Gallery, File, Voice, Location.

-
Share your location — tap Location in the attachments row to attach your current GPS position.
- Reply to messages — tap a message to reply in-thread. Tap the quoted preview inside a reply to scroll back to the original message.
- React with emoji — long-press a message to add or remove a reaction. Reactions from all participants appear below the bubble.
- Forward messages — long-press a message and choose Forward to send it to another chat in the same event.
- Save media to an incident or penalty — long-press a message with attached media and choose Save to link the attachment to a related incident or penalty.
Closed channels
When a channel is closed (for example, after an event wraps up), the message input is replaced with a notice and no further messages can be sent. Existing messages remain readable.
Penalty and incident chats
When a penalty or incident is submitted, a linked chat thread can be created from the penalty or incident review screen (available on large events). Officials can discuss the specific penalty or incident in this thread without cluttering the main channels.
Notifications
Chat notifications are controlled per-channel. You can:
- Enable or disable notifications for each channel.
- See unread message indicators on the chat list.
- Receive push notifications for new messages (if enabled).
Reporting
If a message is inappropriate, you can report it. Reports are categorised (harassment, hate speech, spam, etc.) and reviewed by administrators.
