Glossary
The words RaceRanger uses, in plain language. Each term links to the guide that covers it properly.
Drafting — riding close behind another athlete on the bike to save energy. Some races allow it, some don't; in non-drafting races it's a penalty. Drafting view
Drafting devices — small devices on athletes' bikes that measure the gap to the rider ahead, so officials can see drafting live. Drafting view
Event — one race weekend or venue, e.g. "City Triathlon 2026". An event contains one or more races. Managing events
Incident — something worth recording that happened during a race — a crash, a course problem, unsporting behaviour. Not necessarily a rule violation. Incidents
Merged race — two or more races run together on the same course, so officials see one combined penalty and incident list. Race configuration
Number series — the valid athlete-number ranges for a race. When an official types a number, the app checks it against the series to catch typos. Athlete management
Organisation — the top-level account, usually a federation or event series. All events and members live under it. Creating an organisation
Penalty — a recorded rule violation against an athlete, e.g. drafting or littering. Approved penalties may be served in the penalty box. Penalties
Penalty box — where athletes serve time penalties during the run or bike leg. Also the app screen the box officials work from. Penalty box
Practice mode (demo mode) — a practice event where you can try everything safely. Nothing counts, and practice data never reaches real reports or notifications. Practice mode
Race — a single competition inside an event — a sprint, an Olympic-distance race, a relay. Each race has its own rules, numbers, and start time. Race configuration
Race control — the web dashboard for monitoring a race: team, athletes, race log, and live maps. Race control
Race mode — the phone home screen during a live race, with big tiles for reporting penalties and incidents. Running an event
Ready check — a pre-start round where every official confirms they're in position. Ready check
Start list — the athletes entered in a race, with their numbers. For connected organisations it's imported automatically. Athlete management
Stop & go — a penalty served on the spot (stop, then continue) instead of in the penalty box. Race configuration
Technical delegate (TD) — the official who prepares an event for race day: races, rules, maps, and people. Technical delegate guides
Technical official (TO) — an on-course official who watches the race and submits penalties and incidents. Technical official guides
TO assignment — a race-level job for a technical official, like Chief Bike or Penalty Box. It determines what that official can see and do on that race. Users and permissions
User role — the event-level role a person holds (Technical Official, Technical Delegate, Medical, ...). It sets their overall permissions in the event. Users and permissions
WBGT — wet bulb globe temperature, a heat-stress measure combining temperature, humidity, and sun. Used to judge conditions on hot race days. Event setup
